“The Negro Problem”
Somewhere in the burgeoning collection of dusty old books that have at various times tried to overtake the house there’s a Sociology textbook published in 1910. The entire book is a celebration of Darwinian theory, and nowhere is it more prevalent than in a chapter titled “The Negro Problem”.
This chapter doesn’t just posit that Negroes are “shiftless and lazy”… it assumes that is a given, and explains WHY they are shiftless and lazy. You see, in the scientific fact of the world circa 1910, the educated men among us understood that because these beings came from places with a hot climate, the heat and humidity were likely to cause those prone work and physical exertion to die off at a higher rate than those who were not, so natural selection favored those averse to hard work.
So naturally these survived their more industrious brethren, thus were able to reproduce, propagating their tendencies both genetically and through the nurture and training they gave their offspring.

Bear in mind, this was not a document produced by the KKK or some similar group, this was the scientific fact of the day as taught by the official thinkers of great thoughts. This wasn’t racism, this was “knowledge”.
Result: In the early 20th century, a dumb redneck would say “Niggers are shiftless and lazy”. The educated sophisticates would correct them and say “Negroes are shiftless and lazy”.
Is it a huge surprise that by current standards we consider our grandparents and great grandparents to be racists? They were not aberrations, they were not evil beasts, they were merely a reflection of what they were taught. Teach garbage, people will believe garbage.
Fast forward to 2013
Here is an excerpt from a piece on MSNBC yesterday, spoken by a well known and purportedly respectable “news” type… Laurence O’Donnell.
“There are new developments tonight in the bombing investigation here in Boston,” said O’Donnell. “But that investigation could be moving faster were it not for the successful lobbying efforts of the National Rifle Association. The NRA’s efforts to guarantee that American mass murderers are the best-equipped mass murders in the world is not limited to murderers who use assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The NRA is also in the business of helping bombers get away with their crimes.”

So notwithstanding the fact that the NRA is actually the leading source of gun safety literature and training in the nation, and is composed of millions of normal taxpaying Americans who love their country, raise their children to be good citizens, etc… those who do not actually have firsthand knowledge of the NRA (and erroneously consider O’Donnell to be a source of “news” instead of political propaganda) will be led to believe the NRA is essentially a terrorist sympathizer organization along the lines of a homegrown Al Qaida.

Amazingly, despite the fact that firearms were in no way involved in the bombing at the Boston Marathon, the tragedy is being used for political purposes by those who wish to demonize the National Rifle Association. There is no need in their minds for a rational nexus, they just blaze away because they are the purveyors of truth as they see it, and their opinions do not require substantiation. They have the pulpit, they will use it to defame and destroy those with whom they disagree… logic be damned.
There was a time when our nation was more “civil” and less “civil war”. There was a time when news organizations actually tried to tell you what happened instead of what to think. Sadly, that time appears to be history.
Now we are engaged in a toe-to-toe match daily, a battle for to gain control of the national consciousness… and news organizations make no attempt whatsoever to be unbiased. They have an agenda, and many people who once at least made an effort to appear to possess a degree of journalistic detachment do nothing more than spew venom daily, attempting to demonize any and all who do not share their political ideology.
It is not sufficient that they prove one idea isn’t as good as an alternative… they must convince everyone that those that disagree with them are intent on assisting terrorists and mass murderers. To achieve that end they will lie, take quotes from context, even doctor tapes and pictures. The end justifies the means, at least in their minds.
Those who predict we could slide into civil war are behind the curve. That war is already well in progress. It may not be a shooting war, but it is a war nonetheless for the hearts and minds of our citizens. When it ends, as always, history will be written by the victors.
In this case, not coincidentally, some are trying to achieve that victory by writing the history beforehand. Years from now… children researching our era will look at news reports and conclude the NRA was an organization of radicals bent on destroying the country by promoting terrorism and mass murder.
How tragically sad. This country deserves better than to be fed blatantly specious propaganda.
